The line is called the umbra and in gnomonic the shadow cast by a ortoestilo (or stake) vertically on a horizontal surface. Is also called also umbra straight to the ratio of lengths between the style and shade. The umbra during orthos straight heliaca (atradecer and sunrise) are worth infinity, as the shadow extends over the horizon indefinitely.
